Community Involvement

Community Involvement

From the early days of HB Cycle, Phil and Linda Hodgson have recognized the value of community involvement.

HB Cycle is a fixture at the Lindsay Exhibition, where they greet customers every year to show them what’s new for the fall season. When time allows, the HB team builds fl oats for the fair and Santa Claus parades. Phil can even be heard occasionally on the local radio station as the guest morning host.

They are also a long-time supporter of the Jeff Beukeboom Golf Tournament, named after the former NHL player and Kawartha Lakes native. The 20th annual tournament is taking place this summer, and has raised more than $380,000 for the local Boys and Girls Club since its fi rst event in 1994.

HB Cycle and Outdoor Centre is proud to have sponsored local hockey and soccer teams for over 20 years, in addition to having regularly contributed prizes and silent auction items for dozens of charity golf tournaments, fund raisers and other local events.

Phil Hodgson and his team have built a strong relationship with Kawartha Lakes Food Source. After the theft of more than $20,000 worth of property from HB Cycle’s shop, local police diligently tracked down the stolen goods and returned everything that had gone missing. Hodgson was so relieved that he passed on his good fortune by donating $500 to Kawartha Lakes Food Source. Since then, HB Cycle has made regular donations, helping to feed some of the most vulnerable and often youngest, members of the community. Phil was also one of the players in the Food Source “Hockey Helps Hunger” game on March 8th , that pitted a team of local hockey players against the Toronto Maple Leaf alumni team including athletes like Rick Vaive, Gary Leeman and Rob Pearson. The game entertained local fans and raised over $22,000 for the food source.

The motor sport superstore has been awarded for its support of youth in and around Lindsay. Each year, Hodgson happily takes on highschool students for the co-operative education program. “I think co-ops are great for students,” Hodgson enthuses. “They give you a new perspective and open up a lot of avenues. A lot of schools don’t have the resources that a dealership like mine has, so its an excellent way of building on the basics.”

Hodgson also believes in passing on his passion for mechanics to the younger generation, sometimes visiting local high schools and answering questions about mechanics as a career option. He has acted as a guest in local shop classes, and brought along snowmobile or ATV models to demonstrate how they are properly serviced.

In the past the HB team has also hosted parties and special events, turning proceeds over to local charities. With an improved economy looming on the horizon the Hodgsons hope to be able to do a little more in the coming years. A 25th anniversary party is in the works this spring and surely a food source donation will be worth it to get in.

The Snowcross brings hundreds of snowmobile racers and spectators from around the world to Lindsay, Ontario. The Kawartha Cup features racers of all age groups, and offers a huge economic boost each time it comes to town. “I always enjoy going out for dinner on the Saturday night of Snowcross and seeing our restaurants packed with the race teams enjoying what our town has to offer,” Hodgson says.

Looking back over old newspaper articles shows the battles Hodgson went through up to the point of paying for the venue with the help of Ski-doo for the first event. “I remember being downtown at 2 am begging the snow removal operators to bring the snow to the fairgrounds.” Hodgson told them he and his team would do all the work and that’s what they did. Now it is an annual event that racers and spectators look forward to every winter.

From its inception, HB Cycle and Outdoor Centre has been focused on serving people, and an integral part of what has made it the household name it is today is their dedication to the community it hails from. “We are proud citizens of our community and hope to do our part to make it a better place to live for everyone.”

The Hodgsons will continue to reach out in support of local agencies and organizations, in hopes that they can make a positive impact on the local economy and quality of life for Lindsay and Kawartha Lakes residents.
